Binge-reading Manga, Manhwa, Manhua

Growing up, I have always been fond of reading and it became my hobby. I have read tons of books already, and this year I started to read graphic novels like manga, manhua, and manhwa. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the manga is a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children. I have read lots of them already. Also, in Korea, it’s called manhwa, and in China, it’s called manhua.

The difference between manga, manhwa, and manhua is that both manhwa and manhua have colored illustrations. While manga is purely black and white. Most anime that people are watching right now is based on manga. Making manhwa's into anime is gradually progressing too. I can’t wait for my favorites to be made into anime! So, here is my top 5!

1. Yakusoku no Neverland by Kaiu Shirai

Yakusoku no Neverland or The Promised Neverland is a supernatural, psychological, mystery, and horror manga. The manga’s story revolves around an orphanage. The 3 main characters, Emma, Norman, and Ray grew up in a small orphanage called Grace Field House, approximately about the year 2045. The one who takes care of them is the so-called orphanage “Mother". The kids are properly well taken care of and are provided with the best of the best. Also, they are required to partake and complete a set of tests, eat together, and play outside. Norman and Emma found out that they are not actually orphans, but instead livestock for demons.

They are groomed well so that they will taste better. Ray, Norman, and Emma are premium meats which means that they have already matured. Every month, one child is being sent away in the guise of having a foster parent. But in reality, they are just being eaten. They planned everything in detail to escape. When I first started reading the first few chapters, I thought this was going to be an innocent manga. But it’s actually a dark and a deep one. This manga taught me that for you to reach your goals, you have to work really hard to make it happen. Sometimes, it’s okay to seek help from your loved ones, to achieve what you want.

One thing that I don’t find good in the manga is Emma’s character. Her way of thinking is overly optimistic and unrealistic. If it was in real life, all of her decisions would have led to their deaths. She knows that everyone will follow whatever her decision is, and I think she exploits that. All in all, it is a good manga. Their journey to reach their goal has been hard for all of them, but it was inevitable.

2. Solo Leveling by Jang Sung-Lak

Solo Leveling is an action, adventure, fantasy manhwa. It revolves around the main character Sung Jin-Woo. Way back 10 years ago, the so-called “Gate" had been opened which connected the real world with the monster world. A few numbers of people were able to receive the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. These people are called “Hunters”, they are based on ranking depending on how strong a person is. Sung Jin-Woo was an E-rank Hunter and was world's as the “Worlds Weakest" because even in the lowliest of dungeons, he’s always on the verge of death.

Even though he’s weak, he has to participate because they earn money bigger when clearing a dungeon. When he found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeon, his life changed. On the verge of accepting his death, he suddenly received a strange power. Jin-Woo could see a quest log only meant for him, a secret to level up. If he will train and complete the quests, his level would rise. He the change from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter that people rely on.

Fans are petitioning for this manga to be made into an anime. I can’t wait for it to be one, Solo Leveling taught me that even the weakest can be the strongest. As long as you are determined, don’t lose hope!

3. Noblesse by Son Jae-Ho

Noblesse is an action, supernatural, school life, drama manhwa. "Noblesse" is a title given to the only person who symbolizes power. Its meaning was distorted among the nobles as for over 820 years, the Noblesse went missing and now it is what the nobles call themselves. Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, the Noblesse is also called “The protector of the Nobles”, his main duty is to protect the meaning of the nobles’ existence. The Noblesse is in equal standing with the Lord in the noble society. The Lord symbolizes authority while the Noblesse symbolizes power.

If a noble harm a human or uses his power for evil, the Noblesse must destroy them. The Noblesse is therefore empowered to act as judge and executioner of any noble at any time that he deems fit. His power has weakened even though he was asleep for a really long time. Whenever he uses it, it lessens his life force. Raizel protected the humans and the nobles till his last breath.

This just shows that you can do anything when protecting someone important to you. This manhwa is currently an ongoing anime right now, I’ve been watching and waiting for it every week. I highly recommend you all to read it! You’ll learn a lot of things from reading.

4. The Last Human by Amazing Works

This Last Human is an action, supernatural, horror manhua. Zuo Tianchen survived and was the last living human in a mutated zombie-infested city. Just when he thought he’s about to die, he found himself back in his class just hours before that ill-fated day 10 years ago. He swears to himself, he’ll protect the important people in his life this time around. Now, he will do everything to survive, equipped with his memory of the next ten years.

Due to him going back to the past, he has changed a lot of happenings. But it seemed to speed up the evolution of the monsters or zombies. Along his journey to defeating the demons, he has met lots of trusted allies. This manhua showed me that you can’t easily trust someone. Because if you are too trusting, you’ll just end up dead. Also, the manhua is still ongoing, I have been waiting for an update for weeks now. Hope you will like it!

5. Talentless Nana by Looseboy

Talentless Nana is a thriller, supernatural, psychological, school life manga. Earth has been assaulted by monsters known as ‘the Enemy of Humanity’, in the year 20XX. To deal with that kind of threat, special schools consisting of teenagers with extraordinary abilities were gathered. These kids are also called ‘the Talented'. The government sent someone to infiltrate the school despite not having innate special abilities. This is the story of Nana, who attempts to defeat the Enemies of Humanity through the use of her intelligence and manipulation.

Nana’s task is to assassinate the ability users. She was brainwashed to do it, she thinks the enemy of humanity is them. Some of the kids she killed are innocent and it bugs me why she is the protagonist. Even though some of the ability users are suspicious of Nana, she still makes them believe that she’s not. The manga is still ongoing, and I don’t know if her perspective is gonna change. But I really hope she does before it’s too late and she’s killed all of them. Also, I have been reading comments that the manga is like the game “Among Us”, which is popular nowadays. There is one impostor among them and it’s obvious who it is.

When a manga becomes an anime, not all the content of the manga is shown. That is what we call fillers, they are made so that they won’t catch up with the manga because some are still ongoing on the list I mentioned. It is also made to spice up the anime. If you ever want to start reading manga, I highly recommend all of these. Happy binging!
